Professional Experience
Gary F. Loveridge is Of Counsel with McDonough Holland & Allen PC where his practice encompasses all aspects of health care law with emphasis in mergers and acquisitions, nonprofit affiliations, regulatory compliance, and corporate and governance restructuring. He counsels boards, senior management and physician leaders on ways to achieve their goals. Previously, Gary served as General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Sutter Health, northern California's premier integrated health care delivery system.
During his 17-year tenure with Sutter Health, Gary provided legal counsel in the areas of nonprofit entity formation, mergers and acquisitions, risk management, regulatory compliance, governance, payer relations, and nonprofit tax exempt matters. He was also a member of the senior management team where he contributed to the development and implementation of Sutter Health’s strategic plans.
Gary first joined McDonough as a litigator out of law school in 1972. As the health care industry evolved, Gary focused his practice and became a key player in establishing McDonough's Health Care Practice Group. He gained valuable experience as an administrative lawyer when arguing for Certificates of Exemption and Certificates of Need or in license revocation hearings; as a medical staff lawyer, presenting disciplinary cases on behalf of medical staffs and acting as a hearing officer in numerous medical staff disciplinary hearings; and as a business lawyer, drafting and negotiating acquisition and affiliation agreements between hospitals and health care systems, joint venture agreements, and related contracts. Gary also counseled boards of trustees on a wide range of matters, including antitrust, corporate organization and tax-exemption issues. Prior to joining Sutter Health in 1992, Gary served as McDonough's President and Managing Shareholder.
Gary earned an undergraduate degree in political science and management at Stanford University. Following graduation, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Upon completion of his service with the Marine Corps in 1969, Gary returned to California and began law school at U.C. Davis.
Gary has been active in many professional associations, including the American Health Lawyers Association and the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys. He is a past president to the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys and the Sacramento County Bar Association. He received an award in 1991 from the Sacramento County Bar Association's Health Care Section recognizing his contributions to the development of health care law in Sacramento. Gary was identified as one of 19 California health care attorneys in the 5th Edition of The Best Lawyers in America, and he is a Martindale-Hubbell AV peer review rated attorney.
