The Art Collection

KimonoMcDonough's art collection is a testament to our decades-long commitment to local artists. From our first acquisition of a watercolor by Alan Post to more than 200 paintings and sculptures that adorn our office today, McDonough has deliberately focused on acquiring original works by local artists.

We do not view our collection so much as an investment, but as another way to demonstrate our support of local galleries and individual artists. The firm has been included in large art tours embracing Sacramento galleries and businesses.

McDonough recognizes that the function of art, in part, is to compel the observer to see things differently. "Because our works are local creations, they make you view our community in a new light," says David W. Post, a professional painter and former McDonough shareholder.

McDonough Art History 101

In 1953 the firm purchased a small watercolor of the river bridge at Fair Oaks by Alan Post. From that small beginning, a steady stream of art has flowed to the firm. During the remainder of the 1950s the firm gradually, modestly, acquired other drawings, watercolors and paintings.

During the 1960s, as the firm's premises expanded, some additional artwork was provided on a monthly basis from the Tuesday Club Art Rental Gallery which operated at the Crocker Art Museum. These frequent changes in the art greatly stimulated interest—and debate—within the firm.

MHA ArtworkDuring the 1970s and 1980s much of the furniture for offices and conference rooms was made by artisans from the Sacramento and Bay Area regions including many pieces by Al Holland, Jr., son of founding father, Al Holland. When David Post joined McDonough in the early 1970s, Al Holland suggested that since David came from a family of artists, he should help collect art for the firm.

For the last two decades Susan Edling and David Post worked to acquire and display most of what is now an extensive collection. David generously added pieces that he created, which brings a special significance to the work. Susan concentrates on enhancing our interior design and helps maintain diversity in our collection.

Every client is invited to tour our gallery with each visit to McDonough.

Art As Expression

Lawyers, traditionally, tend to be verbal people while painters work in non-verbal communication and impressions. Unlike the typical law office decorated with plaques, diplomas, and other professional emblems, McDonough enjoys devoting a good deal of its physical space to the non-verbal and impressionistic.

JazzOur art collection allows people to enjoy art as it was meant to be enjoyed—in day-to-day life. Every hallway, conference room and expanse of wall is punctuated by art. Generally, the art makes the office more beautiful and the workplace more pleasant.

However, Susan Edling, head of the firm's committee on art and space planning, admits that not everyone finds the same thing pleasant. "Tastes vary. Some people find one color, scene or combination of shapes pleasing while others find it disturbing. So there is usually a variety of comment whenever we do a major shift of our paintings. But it is great to see (and hear) people noticing and reacting."

The diversity of our collection (including the fact that many Post paintings are part of it) reflects the fact that McDonough lawyers are individuals who are open-minded and not easily pigeonholed.
